We caught up with Kalani Miller, co-founder of MIKOH Swimwear for the latest info and details on 2012 swim trends.
What are some of the top trends you are seeing in next year’s swimwear as far as cuts, colors, fabrics, etc.?
MIKOH Swimwear is loving bright colors and a new spin on the basics. Why not add string detailing or banding to the basics? We are also seeing a trend of double fabric swimwear and the phasing out of swimwear lining. The extra comfort and superb fit is perfect for the body. Also, there is a trending towards smaller Brazilian cut bottoms. check out the basic bottom “Capri” from the 2011 collection.
What changes are you seeing on the business side?
It seems like people are buying swimwear earlier than ever this year. After a chilly summer last year, everyone is ready for some sun, which has resulted in a bump in business earlier this summer. I think we are all anticipating the summer buying season.
What additions are you making for next year?
Consumers will see variations of MIKOH favorites with new colors, patterns, and more cover ups. Cover ups are a beach essential and fun way to change the look of one suit. Of course MIKOH will be hardware free, seamless, and always fresh. We are excited to share the 2012 collection, but can’t give out too many secrets!
Are there any trends we saw last season that we won’t see this time around?
Say goodbye to ruffles and hardware!
What are your thoughts on the separates category? Is this becoming more or less important for your brand?
We love selling and promoting the selling of separates. When a woman goes to an underwear store, she hardly buys the same size bra and patnies. Every woman is special and should be able to pick and choose her size appropriately to her body type and size. Selling in separates gives buyers the option to choose a Large top and Small bottom, or any combination. It is also fun to see buyers choose one top and two bottoms for a fresh look.
How are pricing and margins changing for next year’s line?
Buyers will see similiar pricing for next year’s line. Again, we will sell as separates which stay under the $100 mark per piece (so a $200 suit). Also, there will be two levels of cover up pieces.
Have the number of SKUs included in your collection increased or decreased, and why?
They have stayed the same.
What were some of your greatest successes of 2011?
We are excited about all the press surrounding MIKOH. After 5 shots in Sports Illustrated (3 full pages and numerous photos online), a cover of Shape magazine, celebrity endorsements, and a bunch of new and amazing retailers, we are excited and looking forward to heading into 2012!
