MIKOH X MIAMI | By the Numbers

Slide Miami Swim Week has been one of the most integral parts of growing our business in the last 12 years. Founder, designer, and creative director Oleema Miller starts conceptualizing, preparing, and designing the new collection a year in advance. This process is private, intimate and held near and dear to Oleema’s heart. Miami Swim Week has marked the unearthing and debut of MIKOH’s newest collections. As we are sad to miss our first ever, active Swim Week, we fondly reflect back on all the prior years in attendance. We’ve made countless amounts of memories and built new friendships that will last a lifetime. We’ve been hands on at every trade show (11 to be exact), executed 2 runway shows, and casted 58 models. We will miss the unique, Miami Swim Week experience but we are there in spirit. We both love to travel and never stay in one place for too long. Miami is a solid central location to jet off to paradise for a detox trip post-Swim Week. Our tradition after Miami Swim Week is to go to the Bahamas for some major R & R. We also love to incorporate and snap photos of our new swimwear and ready-to-wear on our trip as a teaser to our MIKOH audience for what’s to come. 100k 13 MILES After running around the city and hotel hopping all day, the party aspect of Miami is essentially a gathering of all your peers and fellow brands to get together and let loose. It’s a good chance to celebrate our peers’ new collections, share our successes, and exchange and recap stories from the hectic day we all just had. It’s important to be social in Miami and show support and uplift one another. As Chinese-Americans we value diversity across all aspects of life. When it came to casting for our runway shows/collection presentations, diversity and inclusivity was a major priority. Miami is such a melting pot of different cultures and countries, and our shows represented our brand celebrating women of all shapes and sizes (from petite to curve) from all different types of cultures coming together. We have previously casted models from Brazil, Mexico, Europe, Russia, and Senegal. It’s also a bonus when the models who show up to castings are fans of the MIKOH brand. 11 02 PARTIES TRADESHOWS When we first started going to Miami, the trade show presence was so much smaller than it is now. It was such an intimate group of brands. Young, like-minded female entrepreneurs just like us were starting up, networking and hustling all in one space. When I look back at how many different brands, trade shows, runway shows, events, and people we’ve gone through, it really reflects on how much the swim industry has grown & progressed.

We always look forward to being hands-on at the trade shows, whether it’s running to the hardware store for tools, the craft store for some last minute props, or personally meeting with buyers and editors. There’s a certain sense of accomplishment and pride that comes with introducing the MIKOH collection to fresh, new eyes. The positive response makes it all worth it.

We are so grateful to have gone to Miami to build our business and network for as long as we have
RUNWAY SHOWS Every year we choose to do an event to debut the new collection. Our favorite memories from past Miami Swim Weeks are our runway shows and/or collection presentations. We love the process from start to finish and seeing everything come to fruition by creating concepts, choosing models, fittings, photography, music, invitations, etc. It’s so rewarding to see all our hard work come to real life, see our designs floating down the runway, and hear/see the audience’s reactions to each and every look that we style on the models. Teamwork makes dreamwork. 58 MODELS

LOVING YOURSELF WITH DEMI LOVATO IN THE LANA ONE PIECE

WE LOVE THE POSITIVE BODY IMAGE MESSAGE THAT DEMI LOVATO SHARE ON HER SOCIAL MEDIA. AS SHE WAS WEARING THE NEW LENA ONE PIECE, SHE SHARED THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE:

So, I’m insecure about my legs in this picture but I’m posting it because I look so happy and this year I’ve decided I’m letting go of my perfectionism and embracing freedom from self criticism. Learning to love my body the way it is is challenging but life changing. Giving up my eating disorder has been the most challenging journey of my life but I work every day towards solid recovery even if I mess up sometimes. Today I’m feeling strong. You all can do it too. It IS possible. Thank you God for this new chapter in my life. #EDrecovery #happyAF

IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT WE ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL IN OUR OWN WAY AND WE ARE BLESSED WITH THE BODIES, MINDS, AND SPIRITS THAT WE HAVE! LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF AND THE SKIN THAT YOU ARE IN.

THANK YOU DEMI FOR SHARING THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE.

UPDATE | A TIME TO GIVE BACK | CALIFORNIA WILD FIRES

THE DEVASTATION OF THE FIRES IN CALIFORNIA REALLY HIT CLOSE TO HOME. WITH CALIFORNIA BEING OUR HOME STATE, SEEING IMAGES AND HEARING STORIES OF THE WILD FIRES BROKE OUR HEARTS. WE WANTED TO SUPPORT OUR FELLOW CALIFORNIANS IN ANY WAY THAT WE COULD.

WE HELPED TO RAISE MONEY THROUGH TWO AMAZING ORGANIZATIONS–  REDWOOD CREDIT UNION COMMUNITY FUND AND REBUILD WINE COUNTRY, BOTH OF WHICH ARE DONATING 100% OF THE PROFITS TO REBUILDING AND SUPPORTING FIRE VICTIMS.

WE GATHERED CLOTHES AND SENT BOXES OF MIKOH READY TO WEAR TO HELP OUTFIT THOSE WHO LOST EVERYTHING. OUR AMAZING FRIENDS RACHAEL GREFF AND TAYLOR GOOD FROM IN GRAPES WE TRUST DROVE UP TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND DROPPED OFF THE CLOTHES DIRECTLY TO PEOPLE. WE HOPE THAT THIS BROUGHT A LITTLE SMILE TO THEIR FACES.

MIKOH X WMAG | DREAM TEAM X RICCARDO TISCI

We are thrilled to see the MIKOH Jaws One Piece in Neoprene Night featured in the November issue of W Magazine in a story titled “Dream Team.” Riccardo Tisci, the former director at Givenchy, just launched his latest collection with Nike.

W Mag took their own spin on the new collection and we are loving the neoprene mixed in with the new sportswear. Check out Dej Loaf in the one piece.

READ MORE HERE:

When designer Riccardo Tisci parted ways with the French house Givenchy at the beginning of the year, he appeared to be flying solo, but it became quickly apparent that there was another family ready to embrace him—and his talents—with open arms: Nike. The designer has collaborated with the brand before, but is taking it to the next level with his latest collection, a full wardrobe designed for an imaginary basketball team, the Victorious Minotaurs. So, who did Tisci cast in his dream team? There’s Blessin Giraldo, the fiery and determined Baltimore teen at the center of the Sundance Special Jury Award–winning documentary Step (just released on DVD); Steph Turner and Khalid Vaughn, who are using basketball as a platform to give back to their Harlem community through the burgeoning youth hoops movement known as Jelly Fam; the Detroit rapper DeJ Loaf, whose first mix tape was titled “Just Do It,” and who has a Nike swoosh tattooed on her hip (her first album, Liberated, drops later this year); the artist Hugo McCloud, whose athletic build is due in great part to the physical labor that goes into making his paintings (tarring, sanding, hammering, torching); models Youssouf Bamba and Duckie Thot, as well as Halima Aden, who was born in a refugee camp in Kenya and has walked the runway for brands like Max Mara, always in a hijab or head scarf. The Minotaurs even has not one but two point guards: NBA star D’Angelo Russell, newly transplanted from L.A. to Brooklyn, where he promises to bring the Nets some much-needed heat (his middle name is Dante); and WNBA No. 1 draft pick Kelsey Plum, who plays for the San Antonio Stars. It is a dream team, after all.
