WHO WHAT WEAR | WHAT TO REALLY WEAR ON VACAY (INSIDER TIPS)

3_28_WhoWhatWear

It’s getting to be that time of the year when everyone is planning their big tropical vacation. The thought of white sand beaches, unfamiliar cuisines, and warm waters is enough to make you book a flight ASAP. Since you probably don’t venture to such locations too often, packing for the trip can seem like a bit of a mystery. Because we want every aspect of your tropical endeavor to be as relaxing as possible, we reached out to professional surfer and Reef brand ambassador Paige Maddison for some insider packing tips.

It is part of her job description as a Reef ambassador to travel the world to surf, explore, and adventure in the most beautiful locations, which for the most part are in fact tropical. I was lucky enough to travel with the Reef team and Paige to Nicaragua and join in on Reef’s “Just Passing Through” lifestyle and motto. It was there that I got to see Paige’s vacation style in action; she seemed to effortlessly have just the right thing to wear at all times, consistently stylish andpractical.

With everything from sensible footwear to hats that actually protect you from the strong sun, how many bathing suits you should reasonably pack, and last-minute travel essentials you’ve never thought of before, this list will ensure you are packed and ready for your most amazing vacation yet.

THE SHORT LIST | MIKOH AT HARVEY NICOLS DUBAI

READ THE ARTICLE HERE

Screen Shot 2016-02-10 at 4.10.09 PM

Oleema and Kalani Miller grew up on the beach. The California sister act are OC born and bred, so it’s no surprise that they know what makes a good bikini. In their teens they surfed professionally and did a spot of modelling, if there were any further confirmation needed that these Cali girls grew up with sand between their toes.

Their laidback-luxe beachwear line Mikoh is now coveted among designer sunbathers – Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and Kate Upton are papped in Mikoh two-pieces regularly. It was only a matter of time before it landed on Arabian shores, and with Harvey Nichols Dubai now exclusively stoking the brand, we decided to find out how the jet setters travel.

What can’t you travel without?
Kalani: I always bring a book with me wherever I go. You never know when you will be stuck at an airport and I always love to have a book handy when sitting on the beach. It’s a nice downtime for me. I also love to travel with my Kindle. It’s a great way to have several books available without the weight. Although, I do love a good hardcover book.
Oleema: You can never leave the house without a bikini! Right now I am loving the Waimea top with the Cayman bottom. They are the Mikoh’s take on the classic bikini and I love that I can still surf and be active in the Waimea top.

What three things are always in your suitcase?
Kalani:

  •  Kindle
  • Sunscreen. I love Shade Sunscreen. It is tinted and helps me stay protected when I know I am going to be in the sun for extended amounts of time.
  • Hat. My mom has always said “Don’t leave the house without a hat,” and I have always stayed true to this. Our Mikoh Panama hat is extra wide brimmed and is like a mini umbrella and great sun protection.

Oleema:

  • Polaroid camera. I love traveling with a polaroid camera. At the end of fun trips, I compile all of the photos.
  • Sunglasses. Mikoh just launched a sunglass range, Mikoh X Sun, which I am so proud of. I love the Lax, which are oversized and perfect for a day at the beach.
  • Turkish towel. I love to have my own Turkish towel when traveling. It can double as a beach blanket or a scarf.

What are your in-flight travel essentials?
Kalani: An extra pair of socks, oversized scarf that can double as a blanket, travel pillow, snacks, and an ultra-thick face moisturiser.
Oleema: Hand sanitizer, oversized hoodie, travel pillow, healthy fresh snacks, and lots of water.

What brand of suitcase do you use?
Both: Samsonite

What brand of carry on?
Kalani: Goyard PM Tote that can fit everything from headphones to snacks and a book.
Oleema: Oversized Balenciaga tote that has been my travel companion.

What’s your go-to uniform for the plane?
Kalani: For me, it depends on the length of the flight. I love to wear comfortable pants if the plane flight is long or international. I love having a scarf that I can wrap around or use as a blanket. If the flight is short, I will get more dressed up.
Oleema: For me, comfort is key. Comfortable loose clothing is essential and I like to stick to basic black.

What beauty essentials do you travel with?
Kalani: I think that when you are on the road and out of suitcase as often as we are, it is important to keep a good beauty regimen. I love all of my products and go as organic as often as I can. I love the face washes from Derma E and it is always important to moisturize after a flight. I also like to take vitamins daily.
Oleema: Make-up cleansing wipes and Bobbi Brown BB cream are important. I also love Carmex lip balm and La Roche Posay facewash.

From your current collection, what one item will you be wearing this summer?
Kalani: I love all of the woven pieces. Everything from the Tuamotu top to the Moorea one piece.
Oleema: I love the more simple sporty cuts, like the Barbados top or the Puka Puka bottom.

Mikoh Autum/Winter 2015 is now available exclusively at Harvey Nichols Dubai.

Getting here from Los Angeles is a little trek but totally worth the flight. There are direct flights from NYC (lucy east coasters!) but from LA, I had a layover in Atlanta and a short 2 hour flight to Provo. I stayed at The Palms  and it was the perfect hub for my vacation along with Kat TanitaFashionable Hostess and Birchbox. The resort is on Grace Bay Beach and sits on the bluest ocean water I’ve ever seen in my life. I can’t even begin to describe the incredible colors of the water, matched by the beach lined with white umbrellas.

We spent our days waking up and having breakfast in the courtyard followed by laying out all day at either the beach or at the pool. We also enjoyed the spa that was just as stunning as it was relaxing …. get the deep tissue massage if you need some knots worked out!

If I wasn’t outside enjoying the property, I was inside my massive room that was bigger than my entire apartment equipped with a kitchen, huge bathtub, a two headed shower and marble counters that I swooned over.

There really is no reason at all to leave the property, everything you could want to do is here. But we did venture off a few times. If you want to try some adventures outside of the hotel we ate at The Conch Shack for lunch with picture perfect picnic tables ( I recommend the fish or jerk chicken tacos ) and also at Coco Bistro.

For a day trip, we took a boat out for the day and was my favorite day of the trip. We started from our hotel early in the morning and while cruising along we saw a dolphin, starfish and caught fresh conch to make a conch salad on board for lunch. We jumped off the boat and took a ride down the slide and docked at a private island to spend some time in the sun.

TIPS

  • they run on island time, meaning no one has any sense of urgency so just relax and enjoy your day
  • local fish includes grouper, mahi mahi and conch
  • the sun is STRONG even if you are tan, like me, wear sunscreen
  • they use US dollars, but its an island so everything is imported making it a little more expensive. pack with you what you can
  • everyone speaks english, as it is a British territory
  • Busy season is from mid December to April and the busiest over the Holidays
  • it has the 3rd largest barrier reef, so diving and snorkeling is popular
  • pack bug spray, our hotel room had it but the mosquitos come out at night
